Oasis Immingham Sleep Easy

November 24, 2013

Staff and pupils from Oasis Academy Immingham presented representatives from YMCA Humber with a cheque for £2,500 following their Sleep Easy event, which was held on 1st February.

The Academy held a ‘closed’ Sleep Easy event, the first of its kind in the region, for staff and pupils at their premises on the same night that 200 rough sleepers raised funds across the region.

Oasis Chaplain Shane Linford coordinated the event, which saw pupils of all ages take to their cardboard boxes in the grounds of the school and experienced one night of sleeping rough to help raise funds for and awareness of youth homelessness.

Sleep Easy Schools events are the latest venture from YMCA Humber as the annual event continues to go from strength-to-strength.

Local schools who are interested in hosting an event receive a pack that instructs organisers how to hold the a closed event for pupils and staff inside the school grounds.

Each rough sleeper at Oasis Immingham raised funds for Sleep Easy through offline sponsorship and the £2,500 raised will make a huge difference to youth homelessness in the region.

Emily, a pupil in Year 7, raised over £1,200, which currently makes her the top Sleep Easy fundraiser in the country.

Communications Coordinator Jonathan and Housing Services Manager Peter were on hand to collect the cheque from Shane and his team.

Jonathan said: “We were delighted to receive a cheque for £2,500 from Oasis Immingham following their recent Sleep Easy event.

“It is wonderful to see local youngsters going that extra mile to tackle and raise awareness of the problem of youth homelessness.

“Oasis Immingham have shown tremendous dedication to learning more about the work of the YMCA and they are the first school in the North East Lincolnshire region to host their own Sleep Easy event for pupils and staff.

“A special mention goes to Emily for her fundraising efforts.

“All funds raised will go back into helping us tackle youth homelessness in the Humber Region and the funds raised by Oasis Immingham will go a long way to assisting young people in the area.”
