YMCA at Armed Forces Weekend

June 24, 2016

CLEETHORPES will this weekend be celebrating the National Armed Forces event, with visits from the Prime Minster, David Cameron, royalty and the world-famous Red Arrows aerobatic team. YMCA Humber is proud to be part of the celebrations too.

Our Rich History heritage project team will be taking to the streets of Cleethorpes across the weekend to promote the project and talk to the public to find out if they have any memories of YMCA in the local area.

The team will be based at the new Moon On The Water venue (formerly the Spanish Steps) on the North Promenade in Cleethorpes and they will be mingling amongst the crowds to teach people more about the project.

Alan Burley is YMCA Humber’s Funding and Volunteer Coordinator and he spoke about the great opportunity YMCA has to promote its heritage, particularly with the Armed Forces, over the weekend.

He said: “We are privileged to have the National Armed Forces Weekend event on our doorsteps in 2016 and we are expecting over 100,000 people in Cleethorpes for the event.

“So that makes it a perfect opportunity for YMCA Humber to talk to people about our Rich History project, particularly because we have had such a connection with the Armed Forces over the years, especially during the two World Wars.”

One of the people that the project team will be focusing on over the weekend is Captain Charles Bellamy, a member of the famed Grimsby Chums, who had a great connection with YMCA in Grimsby during its formative years but who sadly lost his life at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. In his last will and testament, he bequeathed YMCA in Grimsby £50 upon his death. Today that amount would be worth £2,500.

Our Heritage Project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and you can visit the website at www.arichhistory.org.uk.
