Sleep Easy Boasts Record Participants

February 7, 2014

YMCA HUMBER is celebrating a record number of participants in its annual sleep-out fundraising event.

Sleep Easy took place on 31st January 2014 across the region and boasted 260 rough sleepers, beating the previous tally of 250 set in 2012.

Now in its fourth year, Sleep Easy sees fundraisers register to sleep rough for one night…so others don’t have to and raise money and awareness of youth homelessness.

All funds raised go to YMCA Humber and its various partners across the region, so that they can continue their work with vulnerable young people.

This year, there were seven Sleep Easy events in total on the night, two in Grimsby, one each in Immingham and Scunthorpe and three in Hull.

Rough sleepers gathered at new locations in the multi-storey car park of Grimsby’s Freshney Place, as well as Hull’s Holy Trinity Church but also at more familiar venues, such as Wilberforce College in Hull and New Life Church in Scunthorpe.

There were also venues dedicated to Sleep Easy events for young people at Shalom Youth Centre in Grimsby, Oasis Academy Immingham and The Hut in Hull.

Organisers are naturally delighted at the response to the event and are hopeful of reaching a fundraising target of £25,000, which will take the event over a cumulative £100,000 total in the past four years.

Jonathan Byrne, Communications Coordinator for YMCA Humber said:

“We are overwhelmed at the support shown for Sleep Easy 2014.

“It just goes to show that the people of the Humber Region are conscious to the problem of youth homelessness and that they really want to make a difference.

“Sleep Easy has become such a flagship event for YMCA Humber and our partner agencies.

“January and February has become a time that so many people across the region readily associate with Sleep Easy and we have already had enquiries for the 2015 event.

“Of course, Sleep Easy would not be the success it is without the support of so many different organisations across the region and we would like to extend a big thank you to them all.”
