A VOLUNTEER at our youth club in Immingham has secured donations that has enabled a new range of activities to take part at the weekly project.
Kelly Slaven, from Immingham, has been a volunteer at the club for over two years and recently reached out to the West Marsh Community Centre in Grimsby for donations to provide different activities aimed at the young female members of the group.
“The West Marsh Community Centre bingo group meets every Tuesday and Friday and they were looking for a local group to donate to,” said Kelly.
“As I volunteer at YMCA’s youth club, I thought that it would be good to see the group benefit.
“The bingo group were able to supply make-up, nail varnish and hair products.
“Some of the girls who attend the group said that they wanted to try out some hair and beauty practice sessions and this seemed like an ideal way to get that off the ground.”
And the donations also stretched to items that made a summer camping trip a smoother one for the young people of the youth club.
Kelly continued: “We received torches, sleeping mats and games – event tents and sleeping bags for the trip to Thornaby Lake, near Lincoln.
“We like to take young people on these residential trips to help them bond better as a group but, realistically, a lot of them are not going to have suitable equipment for such a trip, nor the money to buy their own.
“So donations like these really help – we ended up taking 17 young people on the trip, which they really enjoyed.”
With Christmas activities now taking up the majority of the youth club’s time, Kelly is already looking forward to 2017.
She said: “I would like to see the different groups within the youth club come together a bit more and do more activities as one big group.
“I think a mini sports day at the club and perhaps a trip to Doncaster Dome would be good for us next year and we can get to see the group really prosper.”
