THERE was plenty of friendly competitive spirit amongst fundraisers of YMCA Humber’s Sleep Easy 2014 event
but one team at the Scunthorpe event were frontrunners on the leaderboard thanks to a generous ‘matched’ donation from their Nottingham-based employees.
The Sleeping Rough’ians were a team of four young ladies (and a panda) jointly from Scunthorpe and Nottingham.
Team captain Monique Glynn originally hailed from the North Lincolnshire town but relocated to the East Midlands city, where she works alongside Karla Scott.
The duo were joined on the night by friends Rachel Nicholson and Rebz Jack as they slept rough for the night alongside 35 other fundraisers to raise awareness of youth homelessness.
And Monique admits that the Sleep Easy event was a real challenge for the quartet.
She said: “Although the homeless probably don’t have access to the materials that were on offer at Sleep Easy, the wind and the rain on the muddy back garden of New Life Church meant we tried to recreate that experience.
“We arrived with plenty of boxes and layers of clothing and we were then give a time limit to create our shelter for the night.
“We mainly tried to tape boxes together and cover them in plastic to protect us from the rain.
“It raises funds for a good cause and we all enjoyed the experience and would definitely consider doing it again.”
And with Karla and Monique raising close to £500 between them, the match funding from William Hill takes the team’s total over a whopping £1,000.
