Today the Foyer held a celebration event for Oakley, who has been successful in securing an apprenticeship in horticulture with North East Lincolnshire Council.

Oakley, a resident at YMCA Humber’s Foyer project, has been on the Way Forward Training Programme since September 2018 and has recently completed his Level 1 City & Guilds Award in Employability.

As part of the programme, Oakley began volunteering with YMCA Humber in December 2018,  gaining skills which have helped him secure his apprenticeship.

Helen Mccann, Training and Quality Lead at YMCA Humber said:

“We are really proud of Oakley; he has put a lot of effort and hard work into securing his apprenticeship.

“He has a brilliant work ethic and I’m sure he will excel in his apprenticeship.”

Speaking of his experience on the Way Forward Training Programme, Oakley said:

“I found the Way Forward Programme quite fun; I enjoyed the activities and found the practical skills useful.

He continued:

“I particularly enjoyed my time volunteering on the Orchard, it took a lot of time and patience to get the Orchard looking as good as it does now.

“The skills I learnt volunteering on the Orchard have really benefited me, like learning how to plant and prune trees.

“I can’t wait to start my apprenticeship; I want to learn new skills and hopefully have my own horticultural business in the future.”
