Working with Hodson Architects and a wider consultant team, YMCA Humber have secured planning permission from North East Lincolnshire Council Planning Committee on the 16th October 2019 for the construction of a new centre for YMCA Humber on Freeman Street Grimsby.

The development will comprise of 74 high quality units, a cultural cafe providing professional training and work opportunities, health and wellbeing space, conference facilities and vibrant exhibition and performance spaces.

Debbie Cook, Chief Executive YMCA Humber stated, “We are delighted that YMCA Humber has received planning permission for our new inspirational building at Freeman Street Grimsby. This is another step towards providing quality accommodation for young people and fantastic community facilities to serve local people”.

The plan has the support of the Enrolled Freemen of Grimsby, who are playing a key role in the street’s redevelopment. Detailed plans have been drawn up by Hodson Architects and all parties see this as the catalyst to realise their vision for Freeman Street.

The proposed development has included key stakeholder consultation, prior to the submission of the application, as well as facilitating positive pre-application discussion with North East Lincolnshire Council who welcomed the scheme from an early stage.

“We would like to thank Hodson Architects and all members of the design team for their hard work, flexibility and passion in progressing our development on Freeman Street, stated Andrew Hornsby, Accommodation Manager at YMCA Humber. “We are excited and confident that the design of this building will meet the needs of our residents, partners and members of the local and wider community”.

The scheme offers a real opportunity to make a significant and positive impact on homelessness within North East Lincolnshire removing the constraints imposed on YMCA Humber by the current building and location and allowing YMCA Humber to meet the diverse needs of residents more ably and effectively through a wider choice of accommodation and support. It will act as a catalyst for the regeneration and renewal of Freeman Street and surrounding areas, which will be of real benefit to the wider community.
