YMCA HUMBER and Saltmine Theatre Company are bringing the five-star rated John Newton – Amazing Grace to Beverley Memorial Hall on Friday 6th March at 7.30pm for its only date in this region.
The hugely successful play is setting sail for its spring 2015 tour, following two hugely successful national tours and an astounding run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it was listed in the top 100 live performances (out of over 3,000).
Amazing Grace portrays the life story of John Newton, from that of slave ship captain to church leader and author of arguably the most famous hymn ever written and has left audiences amazed and inspired.
Newton was press ganged into the navy at nineteen and, torn from the girl he loves, he is a man beyond hope. Drawn into the harsh world of the 18th Century slave trade, everything changes one stormy night. Amazing Grace is a powerfully moving story of freedom and the remarkable power of love and grace to transform a life.
Chrissy Leslie, 64, previously saw the play in its run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
She said: “The acting was superb, as was the set – this is one of the best productions I have ever seen.
“The use of folk music and hymns to illustrate the times was extremely effective.”
John Newton – Amazing Grace will take place on Friday 6th March at Beverley Memorial Hall, 73-75 Lairgate, Beverley, HU17 8HN. The play is suitable for ages 12 and above and tickets are available now, priced £5 (plus booking fee) from https://www.eventbrite.com/e/john-newton-amazing-grace-tickets-1436848653 or by calling (01472) 693388.
