Community Consultations at Local Fresher Fairs

September 29, 2015

WE recently attended Freshers’ Fairs at both Franklin College and Grimsby Institute and held Community Consultations with students to find out what they would like from events and activities in their communities.

The Franklin College event was held on Thursday 10 September, with over 85 young people taking part in the consultation. Some of the activities they highlighted as being of interest to them were a Charity Onesie Walk, archery, anime lessons and a silent disco.

On Wednesday 16 September, we attended the Grimsby Institute Freshers’ Fair, with another 60 young people adding to the consultation. This time they highlighted open mic nights, a student-led ComicCon and a comedy club as some of the activities that they were interested in.

Penny Thompson is our Senior Community Organiser and she spoke about the success of the two consultations.

She said: “These were our first student-specific community consultations, so to get nearly 150 young people over the two events was an excellent response.

“Some of the suggestions that have been put forward are very eye-opening and could go a long way to helping young people shape future YMCA fundraising events or activities in their local communities.”
