YMCA Humber celebrates five years at 21 Freeman Street

In 2021, 21 Freeman Street opened its doors, a new home for YMCA Humber and 74 residents. Since then, it has become far more than a building – it has become a place where people can rebuild their confidence, find stability and create brighter futures.

For the last five years, 21 Freeman Street has been shaped by everyone who has lived, worked, learned and found support at YMCA Humber. Every story, every achievement and every step forward has helped make this community what it is today.  

One of our former residents said, “I am more confident in myself and confident as a mother, I’m standing on my own feet and independent which is what I always wanted.”

Another said, “the YMCA is a good place for you, they give you support and I am happy I have somewhere to stay.”

21 Freeman Street is more than just about putting a roof over somebody’s head, it’s a place where people can belong, contribute and thrive.

Kate Conway, Chief Executive at YMCA Humber said, “for our residents to have a safe environment that they can call home is really important. Everything is on their doorstep so people can get the help they need to live their most fulfilled lives.”

Over the past five years, the services based at 21 Freeman Street have grown significantly, transforming the building into a vibrant community hub that supports people of all ages.

Alongside providing safe accommodation, YMCA Humber operates a community café, wellbeing services that support both residents and members of the community, a thriving youth club, as well as a wraparound care and holiday club provision to support local families.

As we celebrate five years at 21 Freeman Street, we're proud of everything this community has achieved together. Here's to the people who have made this place a home, the staff and supporters who continue to make a difference, and the many more lives that will be supported in the years ahead.
